To cereal or not to cereal...??

Cereal (hot or cold) is a great way to find fiber, whole grains and B vitamins! I get a lot questions from diabetics or folks concerned with elevated blood sugar about cereal and its sugar content. My response to that is simple; practice portion control! Someone concerned about controlling their sugar for health reasons should practice reading food/nutrition labels often. In short, find a cereal with at least 3g of fiber or more, read the label to determine how much is enough, use a measuring cup if you have to and if you're not satisfied, feel free to add something to your breakfast: a boiled egg, small serving of fruit or a slice of whole grain bread are all good options to go with. -these choices will keep you feeling full and satisfied, decreasing the chance for extra unnecessary
snacking.

There are so many options of cereal for you to choose from; I've added photos of a few of my yummy favorites!! Feel free to use whole grain cereal as a mid-day snack, create your own trail mix or add to your favorite yogurt, etc.

On the go...there's a SNACK for that!

High energy snacks like mixed nuts, fruit and whole grains provide heart healthy fats, fiber and protein. All of these nutrients will keep you feeling fuller, longer....and will hopefully keep you away from the vending machines. Buy your snacks already portioned out for you or take a few minutes to portion and pack yourself! It's definitely time well spent if you're trying to control your snacking and reduce calories/fat from unhealthy options. Be sure to practice proper portion control, balance, read your nutrition labels, and enjoy!

Visit the grocery store and take a trip down the snack aisle to explore healthier options and don't be afraid to try something new! You may find your new favorite snack. ;)
